Transhumance
Navigating gender isn't easy, especially when you're a clown. Transhumance takes its all-ages audience on a playful and surreal journey through and around gender norms, exploring what it means to be a trans human - or any human - in a binary world.
Winner of a 2020 Weekly Award for Best Physical Theater and Comedy at the Adelaide Fringe Festival, Transhumance most recently appeared in The Kennedy Center's Millennium Stage Series for Pride Month 2024. In a time when the conversations around gender can be sensitive and heated, this show aims to bring much needed beauty and humor to the subject.
Transhumance is the flagship production of Butch Mermaid Productions, whose mission is to make queer joy irresistible and contagious.
Reviewers have called Transhumance "an absolute delight....human, humane
and exquisite" and "delicate yet muscular"; "The whole show is an
absolute delight. Poignant and heart-filling. It bursts with humour and
hope. It is human, humane and exquisite" (Johnathan Kingston-Smith,
Theaterview); "[A] savvy piece that reminds us of the power of our
choices and our freedom" (Erin O'Flahtery, Theatre Scenes); "Upstill is
a beautiful performer with considerable skills and attention to
detail... A delicate yet muscular piece that clearly and poignantly
expresses its message" (Brett Adams, Theatreview).
